The Rodney and Northland coastal region is one of the most dog-friendly parts of New Zealand. From wild surf beaches and sheltered estuaries to bush-clad trails and riverside paths, there is an incredible variety of walks to enjoy with your dog. Whether you are a local or visiting for the weekend, this guide covers the best dog-friendly walks and beaches across all nine towns in the region.
A quick note: leash rules and access can change seasonally, so always check the latest council signage at each location. We have included general guidance below, but your local district council website will have the most current rules. For a full overview of dog bylaws and fines, see our guide to Auckland dog waste rules.
Mangawhai
Mangawhai Heads Beach
One of the most stunning beaches in Northland, Mangawhai Heads offers a long stretch of golden sand that is perfect for dogs who love to run. The beach extends for several kilometres, giving you and your dog plenty of space to explore. The northern end of the beach tends to be quieter and is popular with dog walkers. Dogs must be on a lead near the main access points during peak summer months, but the rest of the beach offers more freedom depending on the season.
Mangawhai Cliff Walk
This popular track runs along the clifftops above Mangawhai Heads, offering spectacular views of the coastline and Hen and Chicken Islands. The walk takes about 45 minutes each way and is mostly well-formed track with some steps. Dogs are welcome on lead. It is a great option on days when the beach is too windy or the surf is too rough for a comfortable walk.
Kaiwaka
Oruawharo River Walkway
Kaiwaka may be small, but it has a lovely riverside walk that follows the Oruawharo River through native bush and farmland. The track is flat and easy, making it suitable for dogs of all ages and fitness levels. It is a peaceful, shaded walk that is especially pleasant on hot days. Dogs should be kept on lead near the township and any areas with livestock.
Surrounding Rural Roads
Many Kaiwaka residents walk their dogs along the quiet rural roads that surround the township. With low traffic and beautiful countryside views, these informal walks are a staple of rural dog ownership. Just be mindful of livestock in adjacent paddocks and keep your dog under control.
Omaha
Omaha Beach
Omaha Beach is a favourite for dog owners, offering a long, gently curving stretch of white sand. The beach is wide enough that even on busy weekends there is room for dogs to explore. Seasonal leash restrictions apply near the main access and swimming areas, but the far ends of the beach are generally more relaxed. The sandspit at the northern end is particularly popular with dog walkers and offers beautiful views across the estuary.
Omaha Estuary Walk
For a quieter alternative to the main beach, the estuary side of Omaha offers calm, sheltered walking along the water's edge. It is ideal for older dogs or puppies who are not yet confident in the surf. Birdlife is abundant here, so keeping your dog close is important to protect nesting shorebirds.
Matakana
Matakana River Walk
Starting near the Matakana village, this riverside path follows the Matakana River through lush farmland and bush. It is a gentle, scenic walk that most dogs thoroughly enjoy — the river provides plenty of opportunities for a swim on warm days. The track is well-maintained and suitable for all fitness levels. Dogs should be on lead near the village and any areas where the track crosses farmland.
Scandrett Regional Park
Just a short drive from Matakana, Scandrett Regional Park offers bush walks, coastal tracks and a beautiful beach. The park has a mix of open farmland and native bush, with tracks ranging from easy coastal strolls to more challenging hill climbs. Dogs must be on lead at all times in the regional park, but the variety of terrain and the stunning coastal views make it well worth the visit. The beach at Scandrett is sheltered and rarely crowded.
Snells Beach
Snells Beach Foreshore
The foreshore walk at Snells Beach is a local favourite. The path runs along the waterfront, offering views across the Mahurangi Harbour and out to Kawau Island. It is flat, easy and accessible for dogs of all ages. The beach itself is sheltered from the open ocean, making it a safe swimming spot for water-loving dogs. The walk connects through to Algies Bay, extending your options if you want a longer outing.
Mahurangi Regional Park Tracks
Accessible from Snells Beach, the Mahurangi Regional Park offers several walking tracks through native bush and along the harbour edge. The tracks vary in difficulty, and the park is a beautiful spot for a half-day adventure with your dog. Dogs must be on lead in the regional park. The views from the higher points are spectacular, looking out across the harbour towards Warkworth and the surrounding hills.
Warkworth
Warkworth River Walk
The Mahurangi River walk in Warkworth is one of the most accessible and popular dog walks in the region. The path follows the river through the centre of town and out into more rural areas. It is flat, well-maintained and suitable for any dog. The river is shallow enough in places for dogs to wade and cool off. This is a great everyday walk that most Warkworth dog owners use regularly.
Dome Valley Forest Tracks
For something more adventurous, the Dome Valley area between Warkworth and Wellsford offers bush tracks through regenerating native forest. The terrain is more challenging — expect some hills and potentially muddy sections — but the bush scenery is beautiful and the tracks are rarely busy. Keep your dog on lead, as there is native birdlife in the area including kereru and tui.
Wellsford
Wellsford to Mangawhai Walking Track
This longer track connects Wellsford with the Mangawhai area through farmland and bush. It is not a walk you would do in its entirety with a dog on a casual afternoon, but shorter sections make excellent dog walks. The Wellsford end offers rolling farmland views and relatively easy terrain. Dogs should be on lead through any sections near livestock.
Local Parks and Reserves
Wellsford has several small parks and reserves that are perfect for a quick dog walk. The town's rural character means you are never far from open space and quiet roads suitable for walking.
Leigh
Leigh Harbour and Coastal Walk
Leigh is a charming fishing village with excellent coastal walking. The harbour area offers easy walking along the waterfront, and the coastal track heading north provides more rugged scenery with views out to Goat Island. Note that dogs are not permitted at Goat Island Marine Reserve, so stick to the Leigh side of the coast. The harbour beach is a great spot for dogs who love to swim in calm water.
Pakiri Beach
A short drive from Leigh, Pakiri Beach is one of the most unspoilt beaches in the Auckland region. It stretches for kilometres, and on a weekday you may have it entirely to yourself and your dog. The beach is backed by sand dunes and native bush, and the sense of remoteness is genuinely special. Check seasonal restrictions, but generally this is one of the most dog-friendly beaches in the area.
Puhoi
Puhoi River Walk
The Puhoi River walk follows the scenic river from the historic Puhoi village downstream towards Wenderholm Regional Park. The track passes through native bush and farmland, with the river providing a constant companion and swimming opportunities for dogs. It is a peaceful walk with genuine heritage character — Puhoi is one of New Zealand's oldest Bohemian settlements, and the village itself is worth exploring before or after your walk.
Wenderholm Regional Park
At the mouth of the Puhoi River, Wenderholm Regional Park offers beautiful beach and bush walks. The beach is sheltered and safe for swimming, and the pohutukawa-shaded picnic areas are perfect for a rest after your walk. Dogs must be on lead in the regional park. The combination of river, beach and bush makes this one of the most varied dog-walking destinations in the entire Rodney region.
